Carolyn Calvin Marble Carolyn Calvin Marble died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 23, 2016. Born to Dr. Dea Bailey Calvin and Novella Vaughn Calvin in Columbia, Missouri on May 6, 1929, Carolyn soon returned with her family to the Galveston area and graduated from Ball High School. She married Eugene Stuart Marble in June, 1949 and in May of 1960 the family, now with three sons, embarked on a two decades long adventure living overseas. Carolyn loved the diplomatic life and was busily engaged in local charity works. Her favorite place was Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where the family lived for almost four years. But she also had many happy memories and many fantastic stories from years living in Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, France and Ireland.Carolyn and Gene bought acreage near Lincoln and, together with their sons, built their retirement home, "Green Heron," finally settling down for good in Lee County in 1978. She stayed very active for many years in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, The Old 300, and the Lee County Historical Commission, and was instrumental in the restoration of the Lee County Courthouse. In 2008 the LCHC honored her by creating the Carolyn Calvin Marble Friend of Lee County History Award, given annually to an organization, group, business or individual in recognition of effort to preserve Lee County History. In her spare time, she loved to weave, play golf and bridge and making jewelry and doll furniture. In recent years Carolyn suffered from declining health and the loss of her husband Gene of 56 years and two sons, Sanford and Stuart. She is survived by: her son Stephen and his wife Sasha; her daughter-in-law Mindy; five grandchildren Noah, Susannah, Max, Daniel, and Novella; and two great-grandchildren Claire and Alice. The family expresses their sincere thanks to the many people who helped care for Carolyn over the years, in particular her steadfast caregiver Ella Patterson and the wonderful people at Hospice Brazos Valley. The family plans a private celebration of her life at the family plot in Vanderpool, and asks that any donations in her memory be made to either the Lee County Historical Commission or Hospice Brazos Valley. |
