Jo Evelyn Brumbelow Goldsmith

Funeral services for Jo Evelyn Brumbelow Goldsmith, 90, of Needville, TX, are set for 10 AM Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Needville United Methodist Church, 8602 Church St, Needville, TX 77461, with Rev. Pam Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Brown-Beard Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 - 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Chapel, 1201 Fourth Street, Rosenberg, TX 77471.

Serving as Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

She was born Jo Evelyn Brumbelow on March 12, 1927, in Rosenberg, TX, to Haden Charnel Brumbelow and Martha Annie Beard Brumbelow. She passed away May 13, 2017, in Houston, TX. She attended Damon Elementary School until the 5th grade and then attended Long Point Elementary, where she was named Valedictorian. A 1944 graduate of Richmond High School, she was very active in volleyball and choir during her high school years. She was named May Fete Duchess as a Freshman and she was voted Most Beautiful. Jo Evelyn continued her education at Texas State College for Women in Denton, TX, where she participated in the traveling teams for Aquatics and Badmitton, and she belonged to the Modern Dance, Tap Dance, and Folk Dance Clubs. In 1945, she served as the Water Front Director at the Girl Scout Camp in New Gulf. She graduated from Texas State College for Women in 1948. Jo Evelyn married Marion M. (Bill) Goldsmith on July 24, 1948. In the Fall of 1948, Jo Evelyn began her teaching career in Physical Education with Lamar ISD and Needville High School. In 1951, she stayed home for several years to begin their family and then returned to teaching at Lamar CISD in 1958. Jo Evelyn taught square dancing, performing at Needville Youth Fair for more than 10 years, Farm Bureau, Fort Bend Shrine Club, and KFRD radio talent activities. In 1983, she was voted Teacher of the Year for LCISD and inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma. After 32 years of teaching, she retired in 1985.

Mrs. Goldsmith was a 50-year member of the Easter Star, Rosenberg Chapter #429, serving as Worthy Matron in 1984 and Deputy Grand Matron for Worthy Grand Matron Sherill Cain in 1986.

Appreciating and preserving Texas history was a passion of Jo Evelyn's. She was a Charter Member of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, a Member of Fort Settlement Chapter Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Education and Flag Chairman for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas for many years, and in 2007-2009 served as President of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She worked as Historian for Needville United Methodist Church for many years, publishing the history of the church and cemetery in 1992, and serving as Chair of the Centennial Committee in 1993, organizing the 100 Year Celebration and Dedication of the historical marker at the church and cemetery. Beginning in 1991, Jo Evelyn worked on historical documentation with the Texas Department of Agriculture Commission, which resulted in the family receiving Family Land Heritage Certificate in 1994 from Rick Perry, then Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner, for 100 years of land in continuous farming and ranching on her homeplace.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Goldsmith remained active in her community. She was a faithful member of the Needville United Methodist Church for 74 years. She served two terms on the Fort Bend County Grand Jury. Jo Evelyn was also a member of the "Classy Chicks".

She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and a true friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Marion M. "Bill" Goldsmith; and by her son, Duff Marshal Goldsmith. Survivors include four daughters: Sherry Roehling and husband, Charles, Donna Schneider, Marian Miksch and husband, Randy, and Carla Bowles and husband, Jim; 8 grandsons: Chad and Carrie Roehling, Chris and Christina Roehling, Brian and Christina Meuth, Brandon and Sammye Schneider, Bradley and Rachael Miksch, Brett Miksch, Justin Bowles, and Jeffrey Bowles; 10 great grandchildren: Carter and Chaise Roehling, Bryce and Cade Meuth, Braydon Schneider, Abigail, Drew, and Leah Miksch, and Christopher Hein and Cade Leopold.
